Shanghai Then and Now

SHANGHAI - Double-digit economic growth for almost two decades has had quite an affect on Shanghai. Many of the classic Western architecture in the core area of the city that was occupied by European traders and bankers in the 19th and early 20th century remains in tact. Rather than demolishing the enormous stone buildings, Shanghai developers have moved across the Huang Pu River and developed the Pudong district, which was previously scarcely occupied. The result has been pretty amazing. Indeed few skylines in the world have changed more over the last half century than Shanghai's.

Here's a picture my grandfather took of the Huang Pu river and Pudong while travelling in China in 1965.
